I meant to ask is it cool to bring a bass to the masterclass... Or leave it at home and not embarrass myself or you :)

You're more than welcome to bring a bass, but there's no guarantee you'll end up using it... Sometimes there's time to get people up and do some playing, but quite often questions get the better of the time.

Never knew you were into prog metal, hadn't noticed the influences either. Are you also into bands like Chon and Unprocessed?

Not a fan of Chon at all. I checked them out a little when I was home during the pandemic messing around with making djenty demos. But they came across as a really thin sounding version of a lot of the stuff that had come before them and obviously influenced them in a big way.

Unprocessed seem to be a little more polished in terms of their production and getting a bigger sound, but I'm so over that thin tapped guitar thing, and all the super obvious elements they seem to go to in their songs. I'd way prefer to listen to Periphery, and in particular the bass parts Nolly added to their records.

It's like all the wannabe jazz fusion guys like Mike Mitchell and Andy Prado that cruise around Los Angeles to all the jam sessions and put together unrehearsed and thoughtless bands to play at the baked potato... They have the most ridiculous yet pointless "chops", but have completely missed the point when it comes to making music. I wouldn't say Chon and Unprocessed are the worst offenders in their lane, but I do feel there's something missing in terms of the originality factor when I listen to them.

I often ponder the question of "why?". why do all the work to get that good at something, and get so close to the freedom of being yourself, but then stop just short of the start/finish line and keep sounding like everyone else?

I think unprocessed is quite derivative too, but I like them. Chon has more of themselves in their music imo.

Being original might be nice or maybe even of value, but it has to be extraverted, so based on what is already there, to a point. Otherwise you'll give people too hard of a time figuring out and giving it a place in their life.
