Are "Bass Playthroughs" Still A Thing?
I made one for you just in case...
There’s no denying that I was influenced by some modern djenty/prog metal bands like Animals As Leaders and Periphery on this new album. Although the actual sound of the record may not directly reflect that, some of the writing and melodic vocabulary I chose in these tunes pays tribute to some of my favorite modern musicians in that world.
As a result of immersing myself in that music for quite some time now it’s impossible to ignore the presence of the “playthrough” videos a lot of these bands post to YouTube.
Here’s my version of that concept for the opening track of the album “Non-Believer”. The process of filming it was a lot of fun, and took me right back to being in the studio tracking the song. It also reminded me how priceless having all these songs as play alongs is! It gives me a chance to really practice the material with the band before we attempt to play it live next week on the road.
