Almost as soon as I had shared the first demo with you yesterday, a block of time opened up in my schedule and I was able to get right back to working on that tune.
I decided the drums were too much for a demo, and were creating a very specific vibe which isn’t necessarily what I want it to end up being. I decided to strip the non-pitched rhythmic element of the demo down to some percussion loops, and really give Cliff a little more freedom to jam along with it and create his own parts.
There are now two more sections to the tune, and the form is significantly longer than yesterday. It’s getting to the point where I may or may not even keep elements of the original demo.
One of the things I’m not a fan of with demos is the transition between sections. It’s such a natural dynamic when you’re playing the tune as an ensemble, and in a demo (especially the way this one sounds right now!) the transition from section to section can sound really harsh.
A quick note to everyone subscribed to this mailing list, reading all the emails, and following the various musical journeys that are taking place right now: I hope this real-time updating of the new album recording is of some value to you. Whether that’s as a curious fan of music who maybe wonders how it all works, or as an artist yourself looking to improve your writing and recording process.
Please be sure to make your voice heard, leave feedback in the comments below, and I’ll be back with more demos and more ups and downs of the artistic process as we head to Argentina in just a couple of months.
Cheers,
Janek
Listening to a creative process at work and unfolding is fascinating. And I love this tune already.
Love it!
