This is by FAR The Most Important Thing For my Music

Always be recording!

Recording and archiving has been on my radar from the very beginning. Long before becoming a musician even. I’ve always had a camera around, a dictaphone, just anything that would create a record of something I was seeing or hearing.

Fast forward to today, in what I hope are some of the most productive years of my writing, my playing and my career, and it’s more important than ever.

As I dip into my archive of audio and video recordings of shows and practice sessions almost every day of my life to figure out what needs work or where I want to go next, I’m going to do my best to share some of these things with you via the newsletter.

It’ll be something that’s not on YouTube or out there in any other public forum, and will be easy to refer back to or highlight in your email if you want another listen.

Today I’m sharing a clip from a few years back where I was working on Pat Metheny’s “Question and Answer”. Not the easiest set of changes to get through, and something I had been curious about playing the melody of for quite some time. It sits in the back of my brain hovering around even to this day, and elements of it come out in my playing when I’m improvising.

I’m not sure if will be a candidate for a song to cover on an upcoming record, or whether I’ll just always enjoy playing it as an exercise in melody and harmony. Either way, this clip is very typical of time I spend with the instrument on a daily basis.

More soon,

Janek
