I always felt with social media that sharing the most burning tune, fastest solo, and craziest changes was the required direction to go in to get people to engage. It’s really nice to be able to share an entire ballad with you here on the blog, that’s totally diatonic and only has a few chords, and know that it’s not out there on any platform that is dependent on statistics to measure success.
There’s no bass solo, no unison lines, no ridiculous codas or intros. Yet as the bass player in the band I still get to be melodic, have a say in how the harmony is shaped, and work as a team with the rhythm section (which featured Julian Pollack from Marcus Miller’s band subbing for Ruslan) to great effect to elevate Bob’s playing.
You know? kind of how it should be…
Let me know if you’d like to see more things like this. The archive is vast and it’s free to share, so if you have the time to watch and listen, I’m more than happy to upload.
Cheers,
Janek
