This is as close I’m ever going to have gotten, but it still taught me a lot. This will be one of my favorite ones to break down in the “Transcription Vault” because this album and these musicians meant so much to me when I was first growing up as a musician.
You can read the YouTube description for all the juicy details about signal chain and recording process, but the main difference with this song was that I was reading it. I changed the challenge from learning/transcribing something fast, to setting up the session like I was on the date and reading the music for the first time. Obviously I had heard the music before, but I’d never played the song which made the reading aspect of the exercise a nice pressure moment. Happy to say it went down in one take!
I really appreciate the positive response to this series of videos, and it’s one of the most fun things I’ve done on YouTube. I’m constantly learning more about my playing and about music I thought I already knew well. It’s not until you get deeper inside it from a recording perspective that you get to experience a whole new set of layers to the time and sound.
I also knocked out another one-taker this week. Really nice challenge, and super fun to play.
More soon,
Janek
These are great for so many reasons, thanks! You're definitely walking the walk!
