The irony is not lost on me with what I’m about to tell you.
I’m a musician. My main focus in my career is to play, write, arrange, and record music. As you will almost certainly be aware, simply doing those things in 2025 is not enough to sustain that process as a career.
I have a YouTube channel, I write books, I give clinics and seminars all around the world, and I even collaborate with companies once in a while to create projects that do bring in some additional income.
All of this in the service of being able to continue to make music.
So where’s the irony..?
Whenever I upload any kind of live clip from the road to my main YouTube channel, it completely destroys any semblance of momentum I have in terms of growing the channel and reaching a wider audience.
Live music is the least viewed format on my channel, and despite the growing channel converting into tickets sales and a larger audience whenever I’m on tour, it simply doesn’t perform well for the algorithm.
It’s an unfortunate irony being that all I really want to do is share music with you, but at the same time, without the YouTube channel flourishing, that becomes less of a reality.
In order to share music with you on a regular basis I’m resurrecting a “clips” channel I had experimented with some years ago, but lost interest in as I didn’t have a reason for it at the time.
For the smaller segment of my audience that care about listening to music and checking out moments from my life on the road touring both as a sideman and an artist, you’ll be able to find them on this separate channel from now on.
The clip I just posted is from last month at the Baked Potato with Bob Reynolds, Gene Coye and Ruslan Sirota.
Bob called a tune we hadn’t played in years, he then proceeded to play a totally different song once I had started it, realized, corrected course, and then we got into “Rise and Fall” at a tempo that was way too fast. Totally my fault btw.
If you dig live clips, subscribe to the channel. I’ll be uploading stuff every week now and creating an archive of deep cuts from the history books, as well as being able to bring you brand new stuff as it happens on the road.
More soon,
Janek
Subscribed to the YouTube channel and am excited to check out the live clips. Totally enjoy the connection shared by the members of Bob's band.
On my way.
