When I think about groove, one of the first things that pops into my mind is Me’Shell. I was fortunate enough to be exposed to her music very early on in my development as a bass player, and I basically learned every note from Plantation Lullabies and Peace Beyond Passion.
Those were the only two albums she had out at the time, but they were the perfect vehicles of inspiration when it came to the low-end element of being a bass player. Little did I know at the time who she in turn had been influenced by, and it took me some years to peel back the layers of Bootsy Collins, James Jamerson and Jaco in her playing.
The result of that intense period of immersion and transcription is an unshakeable confidence in my time and groove whenever I step onstage. I literally think, every time I’m onstage playing, how lucky I was to discover her at such a critical point in my learning process.
This show is from NY sometime in the early to mid 2000’s.
