It’s a long one today, so let’s start with the swag!
I’m giving away a set of In-Ear monitors, an item that I talked about in the latest episode of the podcast to highlight the reality of gear videos, paid reviews, and what actually goes on behind the scenes of YouTubers who give their opinion on products.
Leave a comment on the video to be entered to win a set of IEMs. I’m going to use a random comment picker on the next episode of the podcast to pick a winner this coming Monday!
Black Friday is fast approaching, and I’m kicking it off by reducing the price of physical books on Amazon worldwide. This will run through December 1st at midnight. The new scale book is also still on Pre-Order discount until November 26th, so if you want to get both the signed physical and digital copies in this unique bundle, grab yours now!
In more musical news….
I’ve been working flat-out on the re-mix/re-master of Mystery to Me for Vinyl, and we’re almost there with the production. It’s been incredible to hear those session again and re-cut some of the bass on the album.
It hit home to me once again just how important time and sound has been to me for as long as I can remember. When I’m sitting here cutting a bass part surouned by that super-band, the feeling of unity and agreement as to where the time sits is one of the most powerful things I’ve heard in a long time.
It’s not just where Jojo is placing kicks and snares, but also the power with which the horns lean into certain parts of a phrase that really glues the performances together. I can play along with these tracks, close my eyes, and be right back in the room with everyone thinking about how insanely lucky I got to be there in the first place.
When I was a kid I would have given anything just to work with musicians on that level, and then to be in the same room leading a record date was kind of a surreal experience in the moment. It might actually have taken 20 years for it to dawn on me what we did that week.
Most importantly I’m excited to share this new version of the album with you.
This is an unmixed clip from my tracking sessions here at the house, with a new bass part using the MXR Vintage Bass Octave.
I believe at the time of the original sessions in 2004 I didn’t have a Boss OC-2 yet, and what you hear on the original album is the EBS Octabass.
The concept behind re-recording the bass is as much about the quality of the sound and overall production as it is the performance. If you haven’t heard the original, you can stream it for free right now and do your own A/B split test on the little clip of “Circles” I shared with you above vs the original below.
Anyway, enough rambling from me. More Black Friday and Cyber Monday things coming soon, have an amazing weekend, and if you need something for your practice routine check out the latest free bass lesson on my channel:
