To everyone who reads this newsletter, engages in what I have to say, and is along for the ride: Thank you.
As I was sitting here in my studio editing the last videos for the new Giant Steps book, I took a break and put my iTunes on random. That’s sometimes and amazing thing, and I get reminded of a piece of music that was pivotal in my development as a musician. It can re-inspire me to dive back into it, and find new things in it that I hadn’t heard before.
There is also a danger that something of my own will come into the playlist, and that is normally met by a swift slap of skip button. But today I was reminded that I have this trio I love, we did a tour last fall that was the closest I ever came to being happy with a live performance, and there are a growing number of you that pay to read this blog and listen to my podcast with no special bonuses in return.
I’ve been racking my brain for a way to say thank you, beyond simply posting and sharing things regularly, to everyone that supports what I do here, and there are some moments in the bootlegs of last fall’s tour that I think some people might dig.
This clip is a preview of what I’m going to share with all the lovely people who have paid subscriptions to the newsletter as a little thank you for being so kind. The location is Helsinki, and the piece is entirely improvised. The audio is from a rather maxed-out video recording I think, so we’re not talking about grammy-winning production here.
It does, however, give you a little insight into what happens on tour, and how free we can be with each other onstage to create that all-important honest performance for the audience.
I will chop up the rest of the show over the weekend and share it with paid subscribers early next week.
Again, thank you for being engaged and supporting music.
Cheers,
Janek
