I love this period of straight up the middle quarter notes in the bar, with the coolest and most melodic solos pre-Kind of Blue. PC is the boss for me, and I’ve transcribed 100’s of choruses of his bass lines and solos.
This is a fantastic lineup with Art Taylor on drums, Paul Chambers on bass, Red Garland at the piano, Sonny Rollins on sax, and Miles on Trumpet.
I dig the old radio broadcasts like this, and the kind of lo-fi presentation of what was the pinnacle of jazz at the time. It’s a time I kind of long for. To hear this music you either had to have a ticket for the show and be in the club, or you had to be by your radio at the right time to catch the broadcast live. That was it. No YouTube. No English bass player blogging about this shit and sharing bootegs the next week…
Enjoy,
Janek
There was a brief time where Sonny Stitt played with Miles - after Coltrane left - I wonder if you have any of that? I don't think it went too well, Miles did not want so much bebop in his group.
