I first heard SRV when my dad got “The Sky Is Crying” on CD in the early 90’s, and can still remember sitting in front of the stereo feeling my face contort with every lick I heard him play.
I obviously had no idea what was going on musically, had no idea what any of it meant, and have been chasing that feeling of hearing something life altering for the first time ever since. Not only when I listen to music but when I write and record it.
The closer I get to these sessions in Argentina, the more aware I am of putting everything on the line, and trying to throw everything I know about making records from the past in the trash on the way into the studio.
The delicate balance of writing in advance of the session, while still trying to let as much of it happen in the moment in the studio, is perhaps the only thing I take from one album to the next.
Enjoy,
Janek
