I feel like Woody Shaw never runs out of gas… There was always an extra chorus or a little more range out of the instrument available to him no matter how deep into a solo he was.
I’ve transcribed so much of his playing over the years, and yet I always seem to find something new every time I listen. If ever you wanted to know how to get that classic angular linear sound that came with the era of Steve Grossman, Dave Liebman, and of course Woody Shaw, this would be the kind of stuff I would suggest you transcribe.
Woody plays so cleanly that it makes the transcription process pretty easy. While he make not take it as far out as someone like Grossman in his early days, he’s a great cat to transcribe to get a foot in the door of this sound.
