I always thought it would be quite a challenge to make such a low-pitched saxophone sound so melodic. I had only ever experienced the baritone sax in a youth big band setting before I heard Gerry Mulligan, and it wasn’t the most pleasant sound from a young player who was probably more of a tenor player being forced into the Bari chair.
This bootleg has all the smoothness of the west coast swing movement, and features from Fender Rhodes that doesn’t sound too offensive in a straight-ahead setting.
I’m not sure of the full personnel listing on this one at the time of posting, but if i make progress on the research, I’ll amend the post.
Enjoy,
Janek
It's from this album, which has been commercially available for a while. They also did a studio album called "Idol Gossip" which is excellent.
