I had this cued up for a much later date, but as I write this I’m on tour playing the Rochester Jazz Festival and just hung out with three of the guys from this bootleg in the Lobby: George Whitty, Dean Brown, and Randy Brecker. They’re in town playing with bass player Chris Minh Doky’s band, sadly at almost exactly the same time ital Information plays tonight.
It’s so often the case that we’ll all be in the same town doing something, but the hang is rarely at a show and ends up being one band’s departure running into another band’s arrival.
I think this was the penultimate show of this band’s touring run from 1992 through 1996, encompassing “The Return of The Brecker Brothers” and “Out of The Loop” albums. This band’s music was, as I’ve mentioned many times before, one of the biggest reasons for me moving to the US and wanting to become a jazz musician.
Kind of amazing to have not only played with all these cats now, but to still be able to run into them once in a while and hang when you’re least expecting it. Dennis Chambers is in Doky’s band tonight, and was the first drummer in the band for the Brecker Brothers return in 1992. He’s looking like he’s in amazing shape after some health issues in recent years, and I’m really looking forward to checking out some of their soundcheck on the way to mine.
Personnel:
Randy Brecker - Trumpet
Michael Brecker - Sax
George Whitty - Keyboards
Dean Brown - Guitar
James Genus - Bass
Rodney Holmes - Drums
Enjoy,
Janek
Yeah baby! Booted this up in a coffee shop here in Times Square, and as it starts all I can hear over the din is the backbeat, but just from that you can tell this is SWINGIN’!
dean brown was great on the early VI records, pretty cool you ran into him while on tour with the current incarnation of the band...
