There are superbands, and then there are superbands. This is the latter…
To coincide with the release of “Possibilities” in 2005, Herbie Hancock was somehow able to assemble this cast of legends and take them on the road for some dates in the US.
Check this out for a lineup:
John Mayer - Guitar
Marcus Miller - Bass
Lionel Loueke - Guitar
Terri Lyne Carrington - Drums
Munyungo Jackson - Percussion
Roy Hargrove - Trumpet
Kenny Garrett - Sax
Herbie Hancock - Piano
John forgets the words of his song as I guess this is only the second night of the tour, and there’s definitely a “loose” feel to the band overall on the concert. But I love it, and I think it’s one of the few times a group with both real pop and jazz stars has come together and worked.
Mayer is insanely dedicated to the music and doesn’t stick out as the “pop” guy trying to hang with the jazz cats. Marcus is like a glue from both worlds, and when you have two horn players like Kenny and Roy out front, there’s not a lot that can go wrong.
Everyone has huge ears that are never switched off, and as a result I’ve dug listening to this bootleg for years.
Enjoy,
Janek
Kenny Garrett, man. Reminds me of the vibe on "Bone Bop." Love his playing.
