Did you guess they were heading here from yesterday’s post?
This was from the “Pursuance” tour in 1996, playing a lot of the music of John Coltrane as well as some things from “Triology” and other recent Kenny Garret recordings.
This was an amazing era of music, and a process that was in place that I get very nostalgic about.
Great artists like Kenny and Pat would make landmark albums on big labels, and then tour the world. Both the album launch and the tour announcement would be highly anticipated, and you’d hope they were coming to a city near you so you could catch them live.
Having lived in London, Boston, New York and Los Angeles over the course of my life, I think I’m very lucky that these major markets were almost always a destination for my favorite artists.
I can’t imagine what it would have been like being from somewhere way out of town, or in a country rarely included on an artist’s tour schedule. And even still, living in those major cities, it was always a massive thrill to see the show announced and then get tickets as soon as possible.
I do miss the old days a lot. Not in a “get off my lawn kind of way”, just in the sense that I had a real connection to a powerful movement of music, and it has had a lasting impact on my life.

Very inspiring! Thanks! I'll keep on grinding through the Giant steps book. Learning so much about how to conquer 2-5s 😀
